I’ve been sending rock climbing videos to my mom and dad who live across the country. It’s a small way of me reminding them that I exist.
They still haven’t realized I’m not that good. Either that or they don’t care. At any rate here’s one I sent them. I’m not proud of how I did but I know I’m learning.
I’ve been trying to cook lately to save money. As I’ve previously mentioned my intention is to adjust to living at a lower income level so I can make games full time.
Because I hate cooking I’ve been making one giant meal a week and then reheating it throughout the week. It works well enough.
In past weeks I’ve been able to fry ground beef with a moderate degree of success. It tastes okay and is a cheap fix.
This week I tried cooking steak in the oven. Sounds easy enough. So I found a recipe. Preheated my oven and stacked up some steak.
In my head I did the calculus. I could just set this in the oven, set a timer and come back to it when I was ready. This was much easier. I didnt even have to do anything while it was cooking. I could clean or get some work done.
When my timer went off I went to the oven to see the results of my latest budgetary experiment. Everything looked good until I took it out of the oven. I pulled the steak stacks apart to realize only the top layer had been cooked. The recipe assumed I wouldn’t stack the steaks
I’m waiting for a bus for the first time in my life. Previously in a situation like this I would take an uber. But today I’m taking the bus.
I make over 120,000 a year at my job as a programmer, and an uber will cost me 8. In terms of time this makes no sense. It’s not worth an hour of my time to take a bus to downtown seattle when I could uber there in 15 minutes.
I’m doing this because I know if I get into the habit of taking the bus it will become second nature to ne and won’t seem alien. Eventually I’ll save more and more money this way. For now it feels extremely strange and like a waste of time to me.
If I’m able to get into the mindset of saving money eventually I’ll be able to quit my job and make games full time. That’s the dream anyway. With each bus taken I can feel a little bit closer to making that next game that will change someone’s life.
